SIIA Expresses Concerns Over Proposed Changes in Distance Education Under NPRM

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) has expressed concerns regarding the Department of Education’s proposed changes to the definition of “Distance Education” in their recent Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). SIIA argues that the proposed redefinition, which seeks to distinguish “virtual location” from distance education and restricts federal funding for asynchronous learning, could limit educational opportunities for nontraditional students. SIIA believes that these changes could disproportionately impact students who rely on flexible learning options due to work, disability, or other obligations. They recommend that the Department of Education maintain the current definitions to ensure continued support for diverse and accessible higher education options.
