SIIA Statement on Digital Services Act

The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) issued the following statement attributed to Jeff Joseph, President, regarding the provisional agreement announced today on the Digital Services Act (DSA) between the European Council and the European Parliament:

“SIIA supports reasonable and balanced efforts to ensure online platforms combat disinformation, hate speech and illegal activities across their sites, remain safe communities for their users and foster a healthy digital ecosystem. Yet details matter. While many specific elements of the DSA are unknown, we are concerned the law would have unintended negative consequences across the global digital economy if not carefully and properly implemented and aligned to existing data regulation and laws. While targeted at big tech, the proposed expansive regulations could have devastating ripple effects on small- and medium-sized companies that depend on large tech platforms and the millions of users who rely on these platforms to communicate.

“The final regulations must strike the critical balance among combatting illicit and illegal content, protecting privacy, promoting innovation, and preserving free speech. We look forward to reviewing the details of the final regulations.”

‘The Right Flexibility for Our Readers’; Publishers Test Life Without Paywalls

“We’re always open to testing and having the right flexibility for our readers,” Fiona Spooner, managing director of consumer revenue for The Financial Times, said late last year after a one-day, no-paywall experiment. Subscriptions went down, traffic went up. Although paywalls remain the standard way to go, entities are stepping up and out.

Use Numbers, Welcomes, Empathy and Tests to Increase Your Email Effectiveness

“The COVID-19 pandemic taught senders important lessons about achieving the right balance of commercialism and empathy in email,” writes Validity. “…Senders need to find ways to give their emails a human element and sell with sensitivity.” I forgot a volunteer usher assignment recently and expected a stern email. Instead, they checked that I was okay. That went a long way for me.

WASHINGTON, DC  – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) released today the finalists for the 42nd AM&P Network EXCEL Awards – the premier awards program honoring association media. Winners will be announced during a special in-person awards ceremony held at the National Housing Center in Washington DC on June 22, 2022.

The EXCELS are the largest and most prestigious program recognizing excellence and leadership in association media, publishing, marketing and communication.

“Every year the EXCEL Awards recognize the tremendous journalistic efforts and brilliant publishing coming out of associations and industry,” said SIIA President Jeff Joseph. “This year’s honorees are particularly impressive as they have produced such outstanding work during a period of historic global challenges. This June, we are thrilled to bring that community together – in person for the first time in two years – to connect and celebrate the honorees announced today. On behalf of SIIA and the EXCELs, we share our gratitude and appreciation to the more than 100 judges and all of the volunteers who have made this signature event possible.”

Through 83 categories—including a new category Best New Innovation—215 EXCEL Award finalists were carefully selected through a two-stage evaluation process by a panel of more than 100 peer judges.  Most-winning companies include Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, American Institute of Physics, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Association for Talent Development, GRAPHEK American Society of Landscape Architects, and Washington State Medical Association.
